In 1976, Skyline Refrigeration embarked on a journey shaped by ambition and opportunity. The story begins in Cranbrook, BC, where Bruce and Doug first laid the groundwork for their business. With a shared vision and a drive to succeed, they sought to build something lasting. However, when the chance to expand presented itself, they made the bold decision to relocate to Lloydminster, a prairie town brimming with potential.
The move wasn’t part of the original plan. Bruce and Doug were initially headed to Estevan when a friend in Lloydminster suggested otherwise: “You might as well set up business here. They only have two one-man outfits—you guys would do well!” Encouraged by this insight, they shifted gears, applied for a business name in the spring, and prepared for their next chapter. Delays in finalizing their business name slowed the process, but their resolve remained steadfast. While Bruce and Doug forged ahead in Lloydminster, their families stayed behind in Cranbrook to sell their homes. By September, Jeanette was preparing to leave the house in the hands of a real estate agent when fate stepped in. While saying goodbye to neighbors, a buyer appeared unexpectedly, and the house was sold on the spot. With everything in place, the families reunited in Lloydminster. Bruce had already purchased a home, which they promptly transformed into an office and workspace, and Skyline Refrigeration officially took root. From these humble beginnings, Skyline Refrigeration took shape. Bruce and Joan settled on the Saskatchewan side of Lloydminster, while Doug and Jeanette found a charming yellow house on the Alberta side. Bruce and Joan had a three-year-old daughter, Kimberly, and Doug and Jeanette had two young sons, Neil and David. With small children and big dreams, both families worked tirelessly to build their future. The early years were not without challenges. In their second year, the bank pulled the loan that had been critical to their plans. Fortunately, Doug’s father stepped in, providing financial support that enabled the construction of a dedicated shop and set the company back on track. By 1978, Skyline Refrigeration was growing steadily, and the addition of Jerry Sharkey, Doug’s brother-in-law, brought new energy to the team. Jerry joined the business with his own young family, fitting seamlessly into the Lloydminster community and the Skyline trio was formed. The partnership seemed to work out. The three partners each had their area of expertise and did it well, forming a solid foundation for the company’s success. Skyline quickly earned a stellar reputation, providing services for tractors, combines, graders, malls, businesses, telephone towers, and refineries within a 60-mile radius. Joan took on a full-time role as the company’s secretary, ensuring smooth operations during periods of growth, including the construction of a larger shop and the hiring of more employees. By the late 1980s, Skyline Refrigeration had become synonymous with integrity, professionalism, and exceptional service. As technology advanced, it became clear that going digital was essential for the company’s continued growth. This shift meant adopting computers, which brought efficiencies and the need for additional administrative support, including hiring an additional secretary. These steps helped Skyline stay ahead in an evolving industry. While the business flourished, so did the families. Doug and Jeanette welcomed three more children: Keith, Tim and finally their daughter Jil. Jerry and Patty also grew their family having three active boys: Graham, Jordon and Sam. Life was a blend of work, school events, sports, and family gatherings. The owners were deeply committed to their community, with Doug and Jerry dedicating significant time to their church and Bruce to the Masons. Through it all, the partnership thrived, bolstered by shared values, hard work, and a clear vision. After decades of dedication, Bruce retired in 2012, marking the end of an era for one of the company’s founders. Doug retired in 2014 following years of determination, and Jerry stepped away not long after Doug, closing the chapter on the original partnership. In 2010, Skyline Refrigeration had entered a new phase when four employees Kevin Borzel, Keith Freeman, Mike Waugh and Vance Webb arranged a buyout. The four young bucks carried forward Skyline Refrigeration’s legacy of hard work, community focus, and innovation. Doug and his partners handed over the reins, proud of the company they had built from the ground up. What began in Cranbrook as a small, ambitious venture became a cornerstone of the Lloydminster community. Today, Skyline Refrigeration stands as a testament to perseverance, family values, and the power of a shared vision. From its origins in a garage to becoming a trusted name across the region, Skyline’s story is one of triumph and enduring partnership. |
